How to deal with an emergency roofing repair

As with all emergencies, timing is crucial. But damages to your property should not be ignored. If your property has suffered as a result of storm damage, then it’s likely that you’re entitled to make a claim on your insurance. Most insurance companies do cover you for storm damage and emergency roof repairs, making these matters of urgency much easier to get to grips with and will in the long-term prevent further damage occurring to your property, costing extra expense and inconvenience in the future.

When is an emergency roof repair required?

An emergency roof repair is required when any fault is found that could cause harm to a person or property. For example, loose roof tiles are dangerous and should be attended to immediately as this could not only cause further damage to your property, but could also cause serious harm to a passerby.

Basic roof precautions before the Storm Hits

With gale force winds always around the corner in the UK, there are certain precautions you can take to maximize the protection of your property and to prevent any hazardous leaks and other costly emergencies.

You should check your roof visually, perhaps with a pair of binoculars, for any damages such as loose or missing tiles and slates. If you do spot any damages to the tiles on your roof, these should be replaced as soon as possible.

Check your chimney and chimney pots with a cautious eye. All of your pointing should be sound and intact.

Gutters can be problematic and are responsible for many of our emergency calls. Often, these calls are prompted due to gutters being faulty or blocked. As a guideline, gutters should be cleaned and checked at least once a year. If they are blocked by winter leaves, they will inevitably overflow and will cause damp to your walls.

You should also remove any loose or unused TV and radio aerials.

Thick snow on a pitched roof can be extremely difficult to remove, especially if the weather has been severe and left it frozen. Ideally, snow that has set on a pitched roof should be removed as quickly as possible because a buildup of snow can cause structural damage to the property. However, you should never try to remove the snow yourself as roofs are dangerous at the best of times, let alone in severe winter conditions. If anything were to happen, causing harm to you or a passerby, the emergency services might not be able to reach you – especially if the weather is anything like the snow we had in 2010.

Plastic gutters can be damaged and distorted by ice and snow. To prevent costly damages, you should have them cleaned and cleared of blockages before the snow falls. If they are blocked and full with water, ice inside will cause plastic gutters damage.

How do I Pay?

Once an emergency repair has been carried out, an invoice will be sent to you via post or e-mail, whichever is best suited for you. You should then simply submit it to your insurance company along with your claim form and ask them to pay us direct. This will usually take no more than two weeks.

Choosing the right roofing contractor in an emergency

Never employ a door-knocker. Door-knockers have horrendous reputations for being cowboys. They generally do not give you a proper receipt, and will always ask for cash.

Be wary of leaflet drops with just a mobile number and no address. If it has an address, do thorough research before you agree to pay for their service.

Never pay cash for a service without a receipt. If the contractor’s work is substandard, where is your proof?

Your insurance company will only pay out on an official receipt and invoice.

Always use a roofing contractor that has public liability insurance. If they don’t, and damages are caused to your property, who will pay?

Always use a roofer who is a member of the Confederation of Roofing Contractors (CORC). Then, if anything were to go wrong, you have a trade association that can help you solve any problems that you may have.
